Voltigeurs, or Vaulters, were initailly meant to vault onto cavalry horses' croups to advance more quickly. This was abandoned early on as unworkable, but the group kept the name. They were trained as skirmishers, the scouts and intelligence gathering units of the era of set-piece battles. The Napoleonic Wars were a direct result of the French Revolution, which itself had plunged Europe into war starting in 1792. From 1803-1815 the Empire of France under Napoleon I fought against a varied array of European powers primarily led and financed by Great Britain. The wars redefined warfare in numerous ways and introduced a spirit of nationalism that resulted in uniting nations like Germany and Italy into cohesive wholes.
