The Cossack units of the Red Army - the military units of the Ground Forces of the RSFSR (1918-1922) and the USSR (1922-1955), formed from Cossacks. During the Civil War, most Cossacks opposed Soviet power. Cossack regions became the backbone of the White movement. The largest anti-Bolshevik armed formations of the Cossacks were the Don army in the south of Russia, the Orenburg and Ural armies in the east. After the end of the civil war, Cossack troops were disbanded, since they for the most part took the side of the white movement. The Cossack population was subjected to mass repression during the "merciless mass terror" initiated by the Central Committee directives of January 1919, signed by the Chairman of the Central Committee Organizing Bureau Y. M. Sverdlov. In particular, mass terror was carried out against the tops of the Cossacks and Cossacks, who took any direct or indirect part in the struggle against the Soviet power by means of their complete extermination.
